Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring

This course is for community volunteers who want to become ESOL home tutors. Once trained, tutors provide one-to-one English language support to adult migrants and refugees in New Zealand.

The course consists of 60 hours of part-time study

  • 20 hours in class
  • 14 hours independent study
  • 12 hours practical tutoring sessions with a learner
  • 11 hours preparation and write-up
  • 2 hours follow-up training session
  • 1 hour of trainee assessment

Class times vary and may be scheduled in the daytime, evening or weekends.

  • The context of volunteer tutoring
  • Cross-cultural awareness
  • Adults as language learners
  • Teaching techniques for ESOL
  • Identifying learner needs and setting learner goals
  • Planning tutoring sessions and using resources
  • Evaluating sessions and reporting on progress

Learning outcomes

After finishing the course, trainees will be able to:

  • Be a volunteer home tutor
  • Support learners as they resettle in New Zealand
  • Maintain an informal one-to-one English language support programme
  • Assist adult language learners in developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
  • Assist adult learners in participating in their local community
  • Evaluate their own and their learner’s performance

The Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
