This course is for community volunteers who want to become ESOL home tutors. Once trained, tutors provide one-to-one English language support to adult migrants and refugees in New Zealand.
The course consists of 60 hours of part-time study
- 20 hours in class
- 14 hours independent study
- 12 hours practical tutoring sessions with a learner
- 11 hours preparation and write-up
- 2 hours follow-up training session
- 1 hour of trainee assessment
Class times vary and may be scheduled in the daytime, evening or weekends.
Course content includes
- The context of volunteer tutoring
- Cross-cultural awareness
- Adults as language learners
- Teaching techniques for ESOL
- Identifying learner needs and setting learner goals
- Planning tutoring sessions and using resources
- Evaluating sessions and reporting on progress
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, trainees will be able to:
- Be a volunteer home tutor
- Support learners as they resettle in New Zealand
- Maintain an informal one-to-one English language support programme
- Assist adult language learners in developing their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills
- Assist adult learners in participating in their local community
- Evaluate their own and their learner’s performance
The Certificate in ESOL Home Tutoring is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
