On Waitangi day (Friday 6 February 2009) our centre organised a trip to Bluff to attend the Ngai Tahu Treaty of Waitangi Day celebrations at the Te Rau Aroha Marae.
It was a wonderful day and a great cultural experience for our learners, tutors and their families. Our group also visited the Bluff Maritime Museum which has interesting displays of shipwrecks, whaling and oystering vessels as well as paintings and artefacts from the days of the early European settlers.
On the marae we were given a wonderful welcome followed by a delicious traditional lunch. Other interesting items on the programme were a demonstration of "poha" (bags made from kelp for preserving mutton-birds) and a video presentation about the restoration of Titi Island.
The trip was part funded by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage through their Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund.
