Centre activities

Our centre celebrated Waitangi Day with a guided bus tour of the local area! Waitangi day trip

On the 9th February, 23 members (learners, tutors and committee members) visited Riverton and the neighbouring areas with a history of Maori and European settlement.

Muriel Johnstone from the Oraka Aparima Runaka was our very knowledgeable guide.

We visited the Paua Shell Factory, Oraka Aparima Runaka Centre, the newly opened Riverton Museum, Monkey Island and the Colac Bay Marae.

On the marae we were given a wonderful welcome followed by a delicious traditional lunch. The rest of the afternoon was spent in understanding the intricacies of flax weaving and some other fun activities.

The trip was part funded by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage through their Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund.
