Our Immigrant Heritage
For nearly a thousand years, people have come to live in New Zealand, first from the Pacific and then from further afield. Although the immigrants' first cultures are as varied as their reasons for coming here to live, they all have a strong desire to participate in New Zealand society.

English is a second or a third language for most new immigrants. Many have studied English in their own country and are anxious to put this knowledge into practice - to get a job, to study successfully or to speak with new friends and neighbours.

For others, communicating in English is a completely new and daunting experience.

ESOL Home Tutors (North Shore)
provides free home-based English language support to adults who do not have English as their first language. The scheme trains volunteer tutors to help refugees and immigrants to learn English and cope with adjusting to life in New Zealand. In particular it targets those who are facing financial hardship and who are unable to attend institution-based courses.

Tutors help learners

  • Acquire language which is immediately useful and which will increase their understanding of New Zealand life.
  • Become aware of their rights and responsibilities.
  • Use language to survive, adjust and develop.
  • With introductions to people or groups in the local area or by helping them contact other services such as the Citizens' Advice Bureau (CAB), community classes or their children's school.

Home Tutor assistance aims to empower individuals to cope and function independently.

Tutor Training - the course covers a number of learning areas including:

  • Cross-cultural awarness - understanding other cultures and relating to people from different backgrounds.
  • Current theories and techniques of language teaching.
  • Adults as language learners.
  • Identifying learner needs and setting learner goals.
  • Planning tutoring sessions, using different approaches and use of resource materials.

Tutor training courses are run four times a year and run for either 2 times a week for five weeks or 1 time a week for 10 weeks. Each session runs for 2 hours.
