In 2006, ESOL Home Tutors provided English language tuition
for 5,744 adult migrants and refugees in New Zealand.  

Of these, 74% were female, and 1,387 learners were refugees
and asylum seekers.

  • 3,720 learners had one-to-one tuition with an ESOL home tutor
  • 3,835 learners attended a Social English Group for tuition and friendship
  • 2,992 volunteer tutors from the community tutored a refugee or migrant
    in 2006
  • 1001 new tutors were trained during 2006


The largest ethnic grouping represented by learners was Asian,
followed by Middle Eastern.
