In 2008, English Language Partners New Zealand (formerly ESOL Home Tutors) provided government-funded English language tuition for 5,756 adult migrants and refugees in New Zealand.  In addition, a further 1,458 learners (ineligible for government funding) were assisted.  

Of the government-funded learners, 4,254 were female, and 1,323 learners were refugees
and asylum seekers.

  • 3,539 learners had one-to-one tuition with an ESOL home tutor
  • 3,923 learners attended a Social English Group for tuition and friendship
  • 2,994 volunteer tutors from the community tutored a refugee or migrant
  • 945 new tutors were trained during 2008
  • The largest ethnic grouping represented by learners was Asian,
    followed by Middle Eastern.
